About Azar Emdadi
Born in Iranian Azerbaijan, Azar Emdadi lives and works in South Yorkshire, UK.
Moving to the United Kingdom in the 1980s, Emdadi obtained her BA in Multidisciplinary Design, specialising in Photography, from Staffordshire Polytechnic in 1989 and a masters degree in Gender Studies from Sheffield Hallam University in 1996.
Emdadi worked as a photojournalist, coming to international prominence in 1990 with her work documenting the Nagorno-Karabakh War in southwestern Azerbaijan.
Azar’s artistic work in video and photography, with particular emphasis on social, political and gender issues, has twice secured her the Yorkshire and Humberside Arts and Video Awards.
Azar Emdadi has held many exhibitions both in the UK and internationally, with a solo show at the HKW, Berlin Germany, Vatan Camiyyati (Homeland Society) in BAKU and in the UK shown work at Stoke on Trent Museum, Leicester City Hall, St David Hall, Cardiff, Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield and Ross Issa Project, London. She has also published, curated and taken part in gallery education programmes.
