About Yousef Ahmed
b. 1955 Doha, Qatar, Yousef Ahmed has been a key figure in Qatar’s cultural scene since the 1970s.
Ahmed trained at Helwan University in Cairo, Egypt, graduating in 1976. Received a master’s degree in painting from Mills College, Oakland, USA in 1982.
Returning to Qatar follow his studies in Egypt. he was the first Qatari to stage a solo exhibition in Doha in 1977. Since then he has had many solo presentation of his work, including at the Qatar Association of Plastic Arts, Doha (2000); Ahmad Al Adwani Gallery, Kuwait (2003); Qatar International Exhibition Center and Al Markhiya Gallery, Doha (2011) and Tabari Artspace, Dubai (2012). Ahmed’s works are held in important collections throughout the world, including the British Museum, London, UK and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
Ahmed played an important role as an adviser to the Qatari Royal Family, helping them to build the collection which would eventually become the basis for Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha, an institution for which he continues to serve as an art consultant.
Hi is the recipient of numerous awards, including from the Baghdad International Festival for Arts (1986), Cairo Biennale (1998) and Al Kharafi First International Biennial of Contemporary Arab Art (2006). Ahmed taught at Qatar University for over 20 years and is the author of ‘Contemporary Fine Arts in Qatar’ (1986).
