    Literature

This painting is based on a portrait of Winnie Mandela, the wife of Nelson Mandela. Titled She who must endure trials (Nomzamo), a reference to her birth name Nomzamo, meaning she who must endure trials, reflecting the complex life she led, embodying her womanhood with the fight against apartheid and being the wife of a prolific figure like Nelson Mandela. The motif of the bird on the bottom right alludes to the symbolic bird which adorned her clothing.
