Dark, spare and tonally restrained relative to much of El-Kadhi Brown's output, Ships in the Night works in deep slate, brown and near-black, oil and ink producing a heavily worked surface from which compressed forms emerge. Cross-like marks suggest masts or signals, presences that pass without connection. The small scale concentrates the work's atmosphere, the title's idiom of missed encounter finding material expression in a surface that holds its forms at the edge of legibility.
