This work on linen, With the Wind shows El-Kadhi Brown working on a support that responds differently to oil: more absorbent, less resistant, the paint sinking into the weave. A deep blue field carries loose green and grey forms, the upper right occupied by a disc of warm orange that reads as moon or distant sun. The linen ground introduces a warmth and irregularity into the surface that gives the nocturnal landscape a sense of intimacy.1of 6
