  • TAGREED DARGHOUTH

Painter, Tagreed Darghouth, uses abstract impressionism and impasto layers applied with gestural brushstrokes to tackle topics concerning structural violence, popular culture, and the marginalised.

Her modernist approach to contemporary topics conflates far-flung modes of inspiration. Darghouth mines the output of artists such as British portraitist Lucian Freud and controversial German artist Georg Baselitz as well as old masters such as Rembrandt Van Rijn and Gustave Courbet; and modernists Chaim Soutine and Willem De Kooning. Drawing influence and forming connections across cultures and time, she also regularly reflects upon figures from philosophy, music, literature and subaltern histories.

  • Nasser Almulhim
Nasser Almulhim is a painter and sculptor based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Florida.

Utilising a highly saturated palette, absorbed from the Abstract Expressionism movement, Almulhim meditates upon the interaction between geometric and organic forms and their connection to the human psyche. His practice assumes a playful and intuitive approach to art-making, doubling as a therapeutic act that opens what the artist understands to be: “The gate of self-healing.” His work materialises his inner imagination, transposing it into two- and three-dimensional forms.

  • Khaled Zaki

Sculptor Khaled Zaki is known for his pivotal role in shaping modernist sculpture in the Middle East. His works, typically in bronze and stone, glide between abstract and figurative forms.

Though he is one of the most prominent contemporary Egyptian artists, Zaki did not plan to study art —he had intended to pursue a career in business before discovering his affinity for sculpture. Zaki received the majority of his artistic training in Italy, reinforced by his experience assisting a variety of artists; he has also received mentorship from key figures in art including Zakaria Al Khonani and Aida Abdel Karim. Zaki's early career saw the artist produce classically informed and representational figures. More recently, his works have become more abstract and geometric in form, but still feature human and animal subjects, sometimes fused with plant-like or fantastical forms.
