Vertigo constructs a disorienting visual field from overlapping warm and cool tones: salmon pink, cerulean blue, orange and green marks distributed across the canvas with no clear horizon or anchor point. The composition produces the sensation named in its title through pictorial means alone, colour and mark working together to destabilise the viewer's orientation. El-Kadhi Brown's handling is at its most open here, the marks loose and varied in scale, the surface refusing the order that the eye seeks.
