In this small-scale work, oil, ink and charcoal are worked together on canvas in deep reds, purples and ochres, the mixed media introducing tonal complexity and surface variation into an intimate format. The subject is suggested in the vertical streaming of marks, forms that read as movement, perhaps a palm tree with fronds catching the wind. El-Kadhi Brown's use of charcoal alongside oil introduces a dry, abraded quality, as though the image has been subject to time. The horses to which the title refers are dissolved into the energy of their own motion.
