Faces: Zakaria Ramhani

15 - 30 April 2008

The captivating Moroccan calligrapher showcased his exhibition titled "Faces" at the Tabari Artspace art gallery in Dubai. Ramhani cleverly turned simple but colorful modern writing and language into vibrant and mesmerizing faces that drew the viewers in. His work received great interest from valued investors, as its originality and appeal were undeniable. The art gallery strongly supported his talent and warmly welcomed him to Dubai to share his work with the city.

Prior to this exhibition, Ramhani had a successful show at the "Word into ART exhibition" organized by the British Museum. Following the same theme, his exhibition at Art Space featured pieces from a series of works titled "De droite à gauche." His innovative approach involved using various forms of writing and language, from which a face emerged to create a portrait. The letters and faces intertwined, creating captivating illusions. Throughout his collection, one could observe the evolution of his techniques, mediums, and supports.

Ramhani spoke about his artistic endeavor, noting its significance after his time as an Artist in Residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. After spending eight months living in France, he returned home to Tangier, Morocco, and began writing on the canvas instead of painting on it. His focus shifted from painting pictures to writing portraits with the materials. He explained that the project's title, "De droite à gauche," derived from the fact that the Arabic language is written from right to left. Ramhani utilized the plasticity, symbolism, and aesthetics of writing to reveal and explore the notions of identity, culture, and art that language generates. His artistic journey became a convergence of Arabic and French languages, representing the confrontation of cultures that shaped his life.

Ramhani was born in Tangier, Morocco, in 1983. He graduated from the plastic arts section of the Centre Pédagogique Régional de Tanger in 2004 and later from the Cervantes Centre for engraving in 2007. He then pursued a career in teaching art, working at the "Oued amlil" in Taza from 2004 to 2006 and at the children's painting studio at the Foundation Tanger el Medina in 2004. Ramhani actively participated in conferences on contemporary Moroccan art and served as a resident artist at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, in 2006.

The talented artist has taken part in numerous group exhibitions, including the "Juillet 2006" exhibition at the Galerie Europia in Paris, which focused on the war in Lebanon that summer. He also held a solo exhibition titled "Corps possédés/Solitude collective" at the Galerie CROUS des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Ramhani's artistic journey continues to captivate audiences and expand the boundaries of calligraphy and visual expression.
