Follow his first exhibition at the Alecco Saab gallery, Beirut, in 1958 Basbous received a scholarship from the French government and became a pupil of the sculptor René Collamarini at L'Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1960. In 196 his works were included in the International Sculpture Exhibition at the Musée Rodin, Paris.

He was exhibited extensively in Lebanon throughout his life, including at Gallery One (1963, 1982), Phoenicia Gallery (1966), Amateur Gallery (1967), Contact Gallery (1972), Damo Gallery (1979), ELCIR Gallery (1984), Rimal La Toile Gallery (1985), SNA Tabaris (1996) and Surface Libre Gallery (2005). His work was also widely recognised abroad with exhibitions at Halles Gallery, Paris (1971); Ueno Museum, Tokyo, Japan (1974); Decoline Gallery, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (1982); Platform International Gallery, Washington, USA (1988) and the Ashmoleum Museum, Oxford, UK (1994). His works are by held numerous public collections, including the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, the Musée Rodin in Paris, the Hakone Open-Air Museum in Japan and the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum (MACAM) in Lebanon.

From 1994 to 2004, Basbous organised the International Symposium of Sculpture in Rachana, Lebanon, founding the International Sculpture Park of Rachana in 1998 to permanently display the work of participating artists.

Throughout his life, Basbous won many awards including the Prix de l'Orient in Beirut (1963) and the prize of Biennale in Alexandria (1974). Following his death in 2006 he was awarded the Medal of the Lebanese Order of Merit, Lebanon’s highest honour.
