Deep crimson and purple dominate Will-o-the Wisp, oil and ink producing a surface that holds light within it rather than reflecting it. A central form, compressed and rounded, rises from the lower portion of the canvas, its edges dissolved into the surrounding field. The will-o'-the-wisp of the title is a light that misleads, a phenomenon that appears substantive and proves illusory, and El-Kadhi Brown's handling of the central form holds that ambiguity precisely: present and elusive simultaneously.
